Norton Everywhere Will Protect Non-PC Devices

Symantec is working on a Norton Everywhere initiative to put its security software on non-PC devices. Symantec wants to keep viruses off devices from smartphones to digital cameras, and Norton Everywhere allows removing data from a lost handset. Symantec has partnered with HTC to develop software for Android and Windows Mobile.

Anyone who has lost a cell phone Relevant Products/Services and worried about contact information about friends and family — or maybe potentially embarrassing photos — falling into the wrong hands will appreciate the ability, with one text message, to wipe a wayward handset clean.

That’s just one of the features of Symantec’s Norton Everywhere initiative, which the company hopes will move its popular security Relevant Products/Services software from PCs to other devices that increasingly access the Internet, from smartphones to Blu-ray players, smart TVs, home security systems, digital cameras, and even picture frames.

Malware-Free Phones

At this stage of the game, few people have had a virus on their smartphone or e-book reader, or had information hacked. But Symantec wants to keep it that way with initiatives for mobile safety, web safety, and device embedded services.

The company, best known for its Norton Utilities suite, demonstrated Norton Everywhere at its annual investor conference Relevant Products/Services in New York on Thursday. In the next few weeks the company will release beta versions of Norton Smartphone Security for Android, Norton Connect, and Norton DNS.

“We are entering a new era where non-PC devices are exploding in numbers, which means more opportunity for cybercriminals,” said Janice Chaffin, president of Symantec’s Consumer Business Unit. “It’s becoming more and more critical for consumers to be protected beyond their PCs.”

“The Norton Everywhere initiative takes a broad view of how Norton can deliver trust and high value to consumers and address evolving market needs,” Chaffin said. “Symantec’s breadth of resources, partnerships, global Relevant Products/Services reach, and brand recognition make it uniquely able to deliver security and more to any Internet-connected device in the world.”

Michael Gartenberg of the technology consulting firm Altimeter Group said the company is looking at issues related to specific types of devices.

Targeted Approach

“If you see their offering, it’s not about virus or malware,” he said. “They’re taking a targeted approach at what makes sense for non-PC platforms.”

Symantec noted data Relevant Products/Services from IDC Research that more than 10 billion non-PC devices connect to the Internet, and that number is expected to grow to almost 20 billion by 2014.

Norton’s mobile protection not only allows remote memory dump but malware protection and blocking of unwanted calls. The company has partnered with HTC MobilityNow, a division of HTC, to work on software development and testing on Android and Windows Relevant Products/Services Mobile platforms.

Available free Relevant Products/Services on both Apple’s App Store and Google’s Android Market, Norton Connect allows users to access archived files via Norton Online Backup or Norton 360 from an iPhone, iPad or Android device. Norton’s Domain Name System will fight phishing, malware and spyware with verified web filtering, double-checking each URL to ensure that it’s authentic.

Norton will be in partnership with Mocana to help device manufacturers “securely and intelligently” update firmware, operating systems, and applications, as well as secure Relevant Products/Services online Relevant Products/Services storage Relevant Products/Services of configuration Relevant Products/Services settings.
